KALIMA 
 

KALIMA is a trio project featuring original compositions as well
as some re(de)fined standards. 
Inspired by modern jazz, improvisation and imaginary folklor these three lady musicians
are sharing a common taste regarding the character and individuality of their music. 
In the attractive trio set-up of vocals, piano and winds they have found an excellent way
of exploring their instruments’ colors of sound and expression with both vivacity and charm...
"This charming trio will not fail to surprise by the audacity of approaching an uninhibited
and intimate jazz, some will call it chamber jazz. In reality a subtle mixture
of different inspirations borrowed as well from modern jazz as from tradition
to deliver songs that climb up into space,

KALIMA have received the Prix du Public/Audience Choice Award at the
Jazz Tremplin d'Avignon 2009.
„Kal“ means „time“ in Sanskrit. Kalima, Indian goddess of transformation,
destruction and composition, 
power, rage, the freed soul and the good vibrations.
In Africa it is the name of a game similar to scrabble.

Three women playing music… 
Sascha Ley, vocalist and actress, carries out elegant side trips into world music,
free improvisation, cabaret songs and experimental vocal techniques with an
expanded creative horizon and ease, moving through different styles and influences.

Laia Genc shows a very individual and powerful touch. Her sensibility for sound
and melodic colours has been shaped at the Jazzhochschule Köln by Hubert Nuss
and John Taylor who have also encouraged her in developing her personal musical style
far-off the mainstream. 

Anne Kaftan a former student of Charlie Mariano, has an appealing approach to music,
moving from classical to jazz, world music and experimental pop.
She composes for theatre productions, film scores and radio plays
and performs with her various ensembles.
